hello thank you for joining appreciate it isolina Maritza welcome we are we are alive so welcome everybody we're going to start in a few minutes as everybody's logging in and joining and get ready to spend a little bit of time with us this evening so we'll wait for the remainder of our panelists to arrive and we'll start momentarily all right again everybody those of you who are joining us call bit early this evening welcome this is Monrovia High School back to school night for the clap for the school year 2020 21 or to get started momentarily here with our official program as people I need to join saluja on disa is the power still off at your at your home mr. wheel on your muted still we got a mid-morning communicate from Edison stating that the power would be turned off at 3:30 not 8 so all of the arrangements that we made for the day were for naught we had we had to Luhan strewn out all over the city sending their classes just in case all right that's good I was I was wondering if that was going to how many how that was going to impact our families and students today thank goodness it was well it was not too too hot of a day right I hear we're in for some serious weather this weekend though Rob you're going to need to change your name someone might get confused I can do that there we go what's right now okay now you're all set now we can hear you perfectly I was afraid I might be getting some hate mail I don't want that don't know I got my pillow CM on there that will fix it Maritza all all is well here thank you Phil in everybody war will get low get started mom Charlie just waiting for our panelists to join us and we will start our official program here as people continue to join us this again is Monrovia High School. to school night for the school year so we'll start in just a few minutes are you Mr dolls I will go to see how are you guys inside almost becoming routine Marissa filter camera down a little bit hey I said was in the panelists group so I'm going to bring him up and I think he can and there we are good and Brian well I will buy a white one a minute or so and then we'll go and get started I'm seeing the participant's number increase as we go as people are logging in and getting settled to spend a little bit of their evening with us here at Monrovia High School again thank you for joining us for this the back to school night presentation for the school year 2020 and 2021 and our very first virtual back to school night and so I'm hoping that you've had a how to get get comfortable and get set and are able to login in here is okay to chat is is open right now if I can I just do a double check and make sure that those of you in the park in the park in our participants are you able to hear us okay I just want to make sure that you are give me a thumbs-up okay good thank you I'm seeing lots of yes is already so awesome Okay so help with that let's go ahead and and get started this evening we have a a short presentation for you and an opportunity to share some important information about Monrovia High School and then have an opportunity for you to meet your your your children's classroom teachers but before I continue first of all welcome my name is Kirk McGinnis and I'm the principal here at Monroe Monrovia High School under stars in Champions and where great things are it's an honor and privilege to be here something near and dear to my heart and I'm excited to start the school year off together in probably the most unique every imaginable and so with that I want to just thank you for your patience thank you for your flexibility and thank you for your continued support of us here at Monrovia High School and in Monroe unified so I'm going to first introduce our board president mr. Rob Hammond and I'll let you say a few words Mister Hammond are good evening everyone on behalf of the Monroe Unified School District Board of Education I would like to welcome all of our freshman families and are returning sophomore Junior and senior families the entire Board of Education vice president Brian one more clerk Maritza travanti board member Selene Lockerbie and board member Ed Gilliland welcome you back to the 2021 school year I don't know about all of you but the summer break seemed to last about 2 days June 3rd seem like was just as last weekend one of the reasons why time is move so quickly is because all the time that we spent planning and developing a robust distant learning platform there was very little down time preparing for our students returning to school traditional manner we all know the best place for our students is to learn at the classroom but until we are sure that students and staff for state will continue with our online platform I want to convey to everyone tonight to commit the board to be your partner in the educational journey of your students please did you have any concerns or questions or suggestions please reach out to us I promise we will do everything we can to help none of us want anyone to become frustrated or feel hopeless our district has faced many challenges and succeed I am confident that we will be able to overcome this adversity we will meet the demands and expectations of students and you have our word on it welcome back Wildcats mr. McGinnis thank you I appreciate that and I appreciate the continued and ongoing support from our school board for those of you who don't know this group they are dedicated they're committed to not only ensuring the policies are in place in our in our district but then to work alongside us at all of our school decides to make sure that our Rams and our staff and our facilities are are in Tip-Top shape and so thank you for your continued support So this evening we have a as I mentioned a short presentation and I'm going to share my screen here in a moment but let me just explain some of the details I just turned off the the chat feature but I left the Q&A feature open so at the bottom of your Zoom screen you should see a little speech bubble icon the Q&A and are panelists this evening Mr Lujan Miss Lynbrook and mr. Dawes and I will will be answering your questions in one of two ways either will answer them directly in the public chat forum so that you are those of you will know in the Q&A tab can see that the they're printed answer or we'll we'll save those in Amsterdam at the end we'll have some time at the end of the presentation for a questions and answers hope is that we will answer most if not all of your questions in our presentation but we will be here for anything that you you should need if you have a a burning question afterwards you may want to try to down for a moment we might cover it and then if we don't go ahead and stick it in that. Chat bar and then we can we can ask him along our way so with that switch over here this is webinars little bit different than the interactive platform that your children are working on their using what we call just a zoom zoom meeting link and so there's mud many more features between that are available between your students set for your children attend our teachers this is a a little bit of a different platform so so bear with us but I we we want your input we want your questions we want to answer every and provide answers to all of your questions so I'm going to go ahead and share my screen now and then I'll get our presentation started and if any of you have been looking over your your child's shoulder in the middle of instruction you probably have seen some teachers shifting in and adjusting similar to what I'm doing right now so let's get started welcome back to school night for the year of classroom to your 2020 and 2021 tonight's agenda we're going to be reviewing the distance learning schedule or I'm going to focus on some strategies for your stew your child success talk a little bit about making that Student Connection here on our campus that's really important piece talk a little bit about the home to school communication link that we need to make sure that we understand how to operate and use that so we can provide support for you and I'll explain a little bit about the teacher presentations and then we'll answer some questions at the end but first let me brag a little bit about to the accolades and accomplishments year in Monrovia High School and these are primarily earned by the hard work of the staff our entire staff here at the school and of course the hard work from all of our students as you see we are gold Ribbon School we 2 years ago earned a full six-year wasc accreditation by the Western Association of schools and colleges that's one of the more the most prestigious ranks you can earn as it as a as a comprehensive high schools were very proud we've been voted one of the best high schools in the US News & World Report California business of Education Excellence award we have countless Golden Bell Awards and of course as you know Powerhouse in many of our source in the cif-southern section more importantly the icon that you see up here on the left hand side is of your screen is the student celebration every year we celebrate our kids that move onto bigger and better things Life After High School and we celebrate our students for all of their goals and accomplishments and this these last this year was no different we had some weird virtual on the line ceremonies and we will continue to look at ways where we can celebrate our students for their accomplishments and celebrate them and support them as they move on to their challenges after Monrovia High School which is our primary goal we want them to be successful in everything that they do what makes Monrovia High School special in addition to our students and our staff the amazing program that we have available for our students we do have a very sad academies here in Monrovia High School we have a math and science academy and Humanities Academy that provide rigorous AP and college classrooms courses courses available for students that want to focus in The Sciences the mass field as well as in the Arts and language and Humanities as well as a budding Arts Conservatory program at most recently is send a number of chair Herman Awards so are students that are performing on stage and butt and behind the curtain in our an arson servatory programmer very proud of them are early college program is second to none and is 10 m in fact recently has been earning recognition at the Statewide level are two year and are for your cohort is providing students with an opportunity to be dually enrolled that's of Monrovia High School student that's also can currently enrolled Julie enrolled as a citrus Community College as a college student they take courses right here in the comfort of on our campus walk right now in a virtual platform but they're Monrovia High school students earning college credits taking college courses at the same time and not only are they building there there are Collegiate transcript but they're also learning garage Monrovia High School graduation credits at the same time CTE programs or Career Technical education programs are designed specifically to prepare students or extended study in in a in a career field or preparation for for employment directly out of high school so r r r CTE programs are robust give us a sports medicine program an auto engineering program digital video production and computer game design as well photography so Works were very pleased with the work that our students students are are reaching and in those programs are Avid advancement via interpersonal determination this is an elective course of students are able to take your at Monrovia High School preparing them with for life in college successful life in college giving them a test taking strategies study skills opportunities 244 embedded to turn within the school day to support them in their academic progress as well as field trips and an inspiring kids to life in education After High School you'll hear a little bit from Mr dolls about our outstanding clubs we have a robust offering of clubs at this high school and our motto is is we want our kids to get engaged and if there's not something already available we want our kids to speak up so that we can create a club around their interest art programs are also Second To None Visual and Performing Arts across our campus we have students that are able to express their their musical Talent their their Artistry talent in various capacities and we're excited about continuing to provide that in this platform as well are dual immersion programs in our elementary middle school programs both in Spanish and in Mandarin our students are learning and molten in into different languages and so when they arrived here to Monrovia High School we have a we have a program available for them as well they can continue their love for the learner learning of language and and being able to be truly biliterate in in in in two different languages and lastly we know that our students are at our student-athletes showcase their talents not only in the classroom and in their leadership in the community but also in the in the competitive field so we're proud of what what we have available and we will continue to work to improve each one of these programs and and reflecting the needs and interests of all of our students and Families let me talk a little bit and just clarify about our distance learning schedule you by means by No Doubt have had some time working with this schedule the week is broken down into three different categories are Monday seminar all students all teachers are participating in a Monday seminar starting at 9 in the morning specifically designed to provide social emotional learning opportunities a time to engage our kids with art with a caring adult on this campus and to provide learning opportunities not only around social emotional but around study habits about using being mindful about their online platform giving them strategies to be successful both here at Monrovia High School in life beyond and so I'm very excited about the first couple outings we've had with our seminar will continue to grow and improve that. Program far Monday the remainder of Monday for our students is an asynchronous learning day meaning this is time for students to continue to deepen work from the synchronous learning that live instruction time their teachers on the other days so Monday is is is a busy day for our kids and we expect them to be working hard to continue to deepen their learning on that Dame Tuesdays through Fridays the morning sun is divided into two parts Tuesdays and Thursdays are even days and 6 days until students to remember that is that Tuesday and Thursday start with a t which is even so Tuesdays and Thursdays are. Is 024 and 6 and 1/3 and 5 meet on Wednesdays and Fridays are early college program meets Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday in the morning 7:30 to 8:55 so that is in lieu of the student zero and first. Class has weird note we had that by Design and then afternoons on Tuesday through Friday we have time Rees dedicated and specifically set aside for two purposes one is intervention and the second is office hours starting next week teachers will be communicating directly with students to invite and encourage and expect them to attend the Intervention Program the afternoon listen to specifically designed to help support students be successful based on assessments based on their class grades and also specific neso intervention will be in the four core each of those afternoons from 1 to 3 office hours are also an offering an opportunity for a students office hours will happen in alternating times so for example on Tuesday the first session of intervention will be English so that English teacher office hours were Beyond alternating times so it's for example if you're bored teachers teaching and intervention time either the first or the second block of that afternoon time they will be available for office hours and all the other times that they are not teaching intervention let me take a moment and just explain intervention post office hours and what they are office hours are involuntary open door policy where all of our teachers will be available for students drop in and get some extra help ask a clarifying question review the assignment get feedback on on on an assignment that they've already gotten back perhaps take a have a retake test that they needed to make a retake on Rob's to get connected with other students to form study groups office hours is a New Concept for high school students but it's not very is not you for anybody that steps foot on on a college campus and I'll personal story I shared this with dart my students here but office hours was was the one piece or one of the pieces that helps me be successful in my college career when I realized that I could spend time with one of my professors asking questions and getting some additional help that was the difference-maker for me as it as a student and so we encourage kids to reach out and read how to their stick their teachers and ask for help spend some time in their office hours getting to know them and getting the extra help and guidance that debt that they should need students encourage them to drop in and just checking with their teachers we're here for their students we want them to take advantage of that so that's in the afternoon time chunk let's talk a little bit about the distance learning framework make sure that you understand some of the expectations that we have in place for students like when students come and check in with it in their classroom we we will review classroom expectations here are some expectations we want students to be aware of and you parents to be aware of as well is broken into three concepts the first one the one our children to be ready we want them to got to make sure that they know where to find their Zoom likes we want them make sure that they know how to login to the Google Classroom want to make sure that their device is charged and ready to go we want to make sure that their environment behind them is and around them is ready for them to focus make sure that they have a spot where they can set up and work make sure the students have their notes if they need to order the book or the reference tool that they might need to be using for last time and so that's a really important thing we want our kids to be ready and being ready in a distance learning platform looks a little bit different than it does being ready on a on campus the second part is being response in addition to preparing your work ready with your lecture notes or being ready with the material that you've read in prepared for for class we want kids to engage with each other in a in a go to settings. And have them talk with her their shoulder partner or will have them break into small groups we're replicating that very same thing within our Zoom classes teachers will be breaking students into small groups and we want you to be responsible enough to have a Converse tears in the classroom about the content that the teachers working then you and the teacher working on we want you to engage with your classmates want you to engage with the with the content material responsibility comes with also I'm trusting you to do your own work we don't want to have those conversations about is this your work or someone else's work was with your name on it we want you two to own the material that you're doing students and I think that responsibility factor is an important piece and be responsible to speak up when you need assistance ask for help when you need it send us an email give us a phone call the your ear teacher office hours responsibility is an important piece for for for all learners and finally being respectful recognize that we're all learning the new platform a patient with with each other patient with your classmates be patient with your teacher if they're having trying to pull up the Right image to to screen share be patient with the process is we're going to get better at it already in in a week and a half about zoom in Google Classroom than it ever did before and the students that I've been working with I've had this great chance to teach three periods of of drawing right over the last couple weeks and so they've been very patient with me I really appreciate that also recognized that the chat feature in Zoom is a public forum is recorded the chat that there's a record of of what you post in chat connected to your name and like you can you say something in polite to someone standing right next to you if you have something implied to say don't put it in the chat if you have ever concerned that something that you need some extra help with send a private chat to your teacher recognized this is a community of Learners and that your words are powerful so we want you to be ready responsible and respectful at all times as you would hear on campus as you we would want you to act that way in a spot for me as well this online etiquette commonly referred to as netiquette has a Justice summary I want to make sure that you understand that are Zoom classes in our Google codes are for us there for you as a student and us as a as a teacher so we want you to keep those private that's not for you to post on social media that's not for you to 2 to share with someone else side of our of our school environment resume bombing that we've experienced and we're addressing happens when some of those codes of Zoom cousins and Google get shared with the wrong people someone can get in and and and hack the system but that's we found it that's a very small percentage so the first best for prevention and protection is for students to hold on and keep those Google codes private that's between you your family and us here at school is not to be put out in the social media reminder the zoom chat as a public forms of be mindful Ramona Lisa said don't say anything if you can send me nice Kirk don't say anything at all and that would go for chat room as well breakout room protocols don't forget a breakout room is just like your classroom whether your teacher is right there or not we know what you're going to be be cognizant and be aware of that and lastly we was weed we asked all students to turn on your camera during your Zoom classes smiles when when I stand up a group of children speaking or group of adults or in classroom I can look at and I can see heads nodding and I can see acknowledgement that that people are attending to my to my words it's really hard to do that when your screen is off hard to see that when when when you might see just dis Imaging in front of somebody so we want you to have your cameras on we understand that there might be a technical difficulty or or you might have be experiencing some issue with your web we understand that just reach out to your classroom teacher send them a chat send them an email let them know so they can work with you some technical issue will reach out to you and I and your family to we'll see if we can work through that but your camera on shows us that you're part of our classes because you chose a secure engage with with the learning so that's an expectation we have for everybody as well okay I'm going to hand it over to mr. Wallace and talk a little bit about essentially important he's for us here at Monrovia High School getting you engaged with each other and with us lyrics so anyway mr. Thank you sir thank you thank you thank you thank you for being here this is certainly different social media that are shouting out High ICU and it is really different I guess there's bonuses you guys could be watching this and eating on your couch instead of being told not to eat in the auditorium so that's one positive for you do you know if you have to get up and sneak out of a teacher's presentation today there's the one that's going to know that you're speaking out and won't hurt anybody's feelings so you know we got to find the positives and all of the negatives that were surrounded by I get to talk to you guys a little bit about what we call log cat pride and the student Connections in the Wildcat Way my job on our campus is the connect your kids and and to seek out for 1600 to make sure that everybody has a place that everybody Arthur School their second home and that no one ever wants to leave that is what I tell people no matter where I go people say what do you do that is what I said I create a school that no one wants to leave I'm surrounded by a staff and Anna castration in a community that all believes them and so if your student is a student at Monrovia High School you are part of our family we don't take that word family lightly at all and we don't just throw it around when you're in family your blood and in high school we bleed green and white scrolling through as the climate and culture coordinator what my job is I oversee activities of the activities director and oversee the red program evil Ink Crew and all of those organizations tied together are responsible for creating the things that connect our students to our campus outside of the classroom the Stafford campus are responsible for goes on in those classrooms but as you guys all know there's so much more to school then just what happens when you walk in the door of classroom and so the hardest challenges that we faced since March 13th is how do we keep kids plugged in how do we keep kids connected to their campus connected to their extended family when we're isolated is so one of our goals is the continue the thriving Club environment that we have on campus we have over 50 clubs on record and some are more active than others right now and we are in the process of creating a virtual Student Union that will go live next week where every club that we have on Camp will be hosted on this one site that you can click on and get information on club meetings and announcements and service opportunities the last week of September we will host our our usual Club Rush week normally were out on campus were having food or not time now we're going to do it online and it's going to be weird if it's going to be different but you know what it's going to be great because that's what we do we create greatness on on campus and I want an echo with Mr McGinnis said at the beginning of his talk students aren't connected success is unlikely what are the connected to an adult to a teacher to add administrator to a custodian to a counselor they need to be connected to a doll Southern campus but they also need have a purpose and it has to be a purpose Beyond I want to get a 4.0 or I wanted to I just want my grades because it's no longer just about grades anymore and as the world continues to change it evolve that's going to become more and more every and our job is a school is going to become more and more about creating citizens were ready to take on the world and a much greater fashion than ever before the surrogate if you can hit that next flight for me cuz I don't think I can do that turn something off this is a partnership and and that's how we want to look at this I had a great time with the leadership kids last week all of our staffers sending his pictures of there their stay-at-home workstations with our classroom or stations and you know I'm biased so I won't lie to you this is like 20-30 on this campus I love the people that I work with and the commitment that they have to this and trying to do everything they can for your stew is amazing to me and I just want to continue to emphasize any chance I get to talk to parents whether it's in this form or it's over social media or through bumping into you at Target it's a partnership that we are working on together it is a jerk that were taken together and let's be real it's really hard and I think it's really important that we acknowledge that anybody that says this is super easy as lying to your face this is not easy at all I want to acknowledge your front it is hard for parents and it's hard for us and teachers but the group it is hardest on is the kids we have to keep the kids front-and-center for the conversation of how do we walk beside them on this until we get back to where we belong which is back on those campuses which is back in our classroom back at our Stadium back in our gym back in the auditorium and back together physically as a family I think there's one for me this should be getting other two more for me set a time to mourn thank you we have had a ton of requests about Spirit Gear freshman parents shout out to you guys who have been sending me messages you don't rejuvenate advice old people wanting to buy Spirit Gear and so the web store is up and driving if you go to the website there's just a button you can click on you don't have to worry about that giant web addresses on the screen and there's a bunch of different stuff available to you there's even stuff I'm going to say quietly so my wife doesn't hurt your stuff on clearance you guys their stuff on clearance in the web store $5 t-shirts you can place your order online and I will figure out how to you may have me dress up as an Amazon driver delivering close to your house but we will get the gear to you I would encourage you to represent the family in our community people should be proud that their part of the wild cat family proud that they walked along katwe and these are some really cool things and they're they're super reasonable they're high-quality we even stole a different hat than the one we sold for like 10 years until this year so please please please check that out and check out your whole family and Wildcat gear and support you know the school Community why there's one more slide for me and that is this we are all over social media I don't know how many people follow us as far as the two major leadership programs that I run but ASB leadership at MHS Renaissance both have very active Instagram pages that you can follow I want to encourage you 10 years ago if you would have told me I was pouting social media back to school night I would have told you you were crazy I am telling you this is where kids are and if this is where kids are this is where we have to be too and we are so please follow us look for the hashtag Together We rise because the reality is if we ain't together we ain't ryzen so we are going to make amazing things happen over these next few months until we get back together and then look out because it is going to be one of the most incredible returns to a school as you have ever seen Scout's Honor peace out thanks Lewis is exactly why you are here cuz he got that energy and we love it about you so yeah I'd go visit the the web store in End by your swag this is the first time ever that we put our staff shirt that normally Justice did the staff we're up for sale for kids so you guys can join us as well three important things I want to make sure everybody our primary home to school is school to home communication links parentsquare it's a new tool for us this year so as I said earlier patients will be a benefit for everybody involved has a ton of opportunities and we're only scratching the surface with what's available please make sure that you are linked in if you have difficulty getting into parentsquare are sorting it out let us know we will do our best to help you help sort it out together like I said we are learning it as well this year but it's it has great potential and we're excited that we have it Aeries parent and student portal that's going to be the primary communication link for your students attendance and grades again students parents student and parent portal for both attendance and grades some more information to becoming a little bit that later but make sure that you're able to login check your attendance and grades in in Aries and then lastly Google Classroom is the is the platform where our students and teachers are engaging primarily between each other with their with their tamuk assignments and submission of work if you have if you need help with any one of those please reach out to us we have people here Manning the phones not just tonight but during the regular school day send us an email if you are need something we are here to help you so I make sure that you know and are able to navigate all three of those end up next I have an opportunity and I would like to introduce I Miss Felicia will you admit yourself and take your fingers off the David Manning that the Cuban age. So miss Lynbrook if you just take a moment and introduce yourself and share a little bit about who you are and what you do Wildcat family and Felicia limbrick on one of the assistant principal I will be housed in the foothill Center working primarily with 9th and 10th grade student however is my responsibility I oversee the early college program which I've already met several view through dual immersion and Abbott those are some of the big programs that I oversee I'm I look forward to seeing you guys back we get to go to school in welcome and have a great school year thank you I v I put this screen up and I'm going to hover over it for just a moment so if you are a 9th or 10th grade shooting our family this is your support network right here not only do you have Miss Lynbrook as your assistant principal but you have an office clerk miss new know an attendance clerk is brand new to our school Miss Jessica Ramos please make sure you have her phone number so that if you need to record an absence you can call her directly leave a message and then of course you're to counselors and I think most every 9th and 10th grader probably already knows who their counselor is there extensions are right there I also put as you know our email addresses are the first first initial last name followed by at Monrovia schools.net so I put a sample down there for you know if you need to send anyone of a an email that's the recipe first initial last name all buy it at Monrovia schools.net let's go to our other Center and mr. Answering questions to there's a couple of people asking about the status question a lot of things about me and other venues for mr. Bell and we communicated back in but yesterday and today there are some restrictions that have been lifted in in in our County and so we are able to begin the process of resume in some of our impersonal workouts with some restrictions so we are analyzing a safety plan to be put into place and to allow some of our Sports to to resume some modified workouts in person wait for direction from me and or Mister Bell and or your coach about some of the next steps it's right around the corner where we're nearing that reality but as always we need to be really cautious and and conscientious and careful about meeting the step the guidelines for everybody involved the seasons of sport we're looking at cifs as compressed and combined are season sport so if all things goes Ridley Rabil to continue as planned we'll resume some contest in after after in January when we return from from winter break so right now the status online Zoom workout space from your coach and wait for direction here or here in the shorts in the short near future about resuming some in person workouts with some modifications that's what I can share right now I know you're anxious about getting back together and I understand that but we want to be really careful about doing that prematurely I'm as I'm I need anything else that other questions that were common ones that you might think that that we should share publicly here hopefully the order forms to start coming in for that swaggin we can't even keep those things on the Shelf so one of the things that Justin summary that I wanted to just to remind everybody is that Monrovia High School weekly coined the term living living life the Wildcat way as a as a as a combination of all the things that are good about being too the other focusing on our on our on our school culture being good time polite citizens are the best we can in our classrooms and in our community and when you're when you're embracing all those in your putting your heart and your soul and your whole entire mind into that that's life that's living life to Wildcat Way and so when you see that green sticker on someone's Hydro Flask around their water bottle or on their the back of their head stop or even on the back of your car I seen a lot of those around in our community you are saying that you are supporting and recognizing in joining us here in the wild cat family without further Ado I am going to bring you to a close thank you so much for your time and your attention this evening we have a large group of people in our in our participant full this evening and I know that you're anxious about clicking over an opening up your your parent video that your videos from your your teachers and so with that thank you for joining this evening I appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to continuing to read the goals that we have for all of our students near Monrovia High School and with that thank you members of our school board for joining Mr Wong I see you join now.
